Summer 2010 newsletter

smilemakers - Orthodontist in SouthamptonMany congratulations to our senior nurse, Lisa Bruch, who has now completed her course at the prestigious University of Warwick and has become one of the first orthodontic therapists in Hampshire.

Another successful examinee is Rachel O’Farrell, who recently passed her exams to become a qualified dental nurse. Congratulations to both of them.

Kianna Watts, our third nurse, is not being left behind, and is currently planning to obtain a radiography qualification in the near future.

At the Octagon Dental Centre we place great emphasis on training, and our efforts to ensure that all our staff are constantly up to date have been recognised by City Training Southampton, who have commended us on our training programmes. Training also makes up a large part of our membership of the British Dental Association’s Good Practice Scheme.

As many of you may have seen, we are continuing with our plan to refurbish 531 Bitterne Road East. The latest phase involved refurbishing and improving the parking area at the front of the building. We will next be improving all external and some internal lighting for the practice, and that is certainly not the end of our plans. Watch this space

Christmas Newsletter 2009

2009 has been an exciting and eventful year for us with the return of Family Dentistry to run alongside the Specialist Orthodontic side of the practice. 531, Bitterne Road East was auctioned by Smilemakers in July 2008 and happily I was successful in purchasing it, securing the future for my practice. I decided to make a clean break and to rename the practice as the Octagon Dental Centre. "531" has a long history as a centre for family dentistry, something that we were keen to retain, and so we were delighted to welcome Luaan Graham and Chris Knight in the Summer of 2009 to continue that legacy. Together they bring a wealth of experience and clinical excellence to the practice, and for Chris in particular, it is a sort of homecoming, as he started his dental career in Bitterne, before moving on to establish, and spend many happy years in, his very successful practice in Warsash. Like Laurie Beardshaw, who was of course, in practice in 531, Chris is also a very keen golfer.

We are also delighted to welcome Samantha McKinney, a dental hygienist, to the team. Sam joins Klaudia Bissett, our Dental Therapist, in providing auxillary services, supporting both sides of the practice. And we are looking forward to Lisa Bruch, currently our senior orthodontic nurse, finishing her course at the University of Warwick, and qualifying as one of the first Orthodontic Therapists in Hampshire.

And so, looking forward to 2010, the Octagon Dental Centre will be looking to continue to provide the same high level of non-extraction orthodontics that you have known for the last 4 years. We will be introducing a range of payment plans that will enable our dental patients to budget for their care in a controlled and planned manner. We intend to expand our team to include other colleagues who can add to the range of services that we provide.

It just remains to wish all our patients, past, present, and future, a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year!

Doctor Patricia Webley

STAFF NEWS

On Thursday 12 March, Lisa our senior orthodontic nurse attended an interview at Warwick Medical School. Lisa will be studying for the Royal College of Surgeon’s Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy. This is a very new course which allows registered orthodontic nurses to become orthodontic therapists. There are only 10 places available on the course so Lisa realised that there would be great competition for places.

An orthodontic therapist is permitted to treat patients under the orthodontist’s instruction and is a very valuable member of the orthodontic team.

We are extremely happy and excited to report that Lisa has been offered a place on the course which will commence in August. Lisa will be one of the first orthodontic therapists to qualify in Hampshire.

Dr Webley and her team all wish Lisa the best of luck.

GREAT NEWS AND A  NEW NAME

You may have heard that the practice's home at 531 Bitterne Road East was due to be auctioned on July 15th.

Smilemakers orthodontics are very pleased to announce their  success in securing the property.

"The long-term future of  Orthodontics is now secure."

We will therefore be able to provide continuing specialist orthodontic services from 531 Bitterne Road long into the future.

"In the near future, Smilemakers Orthodontics will provide family dental care, as well as Specialist Orthodontic services and will adopt a new name "Octagon Dental Centre" thus better promoting the full range of dental services offered."
